Local man Nigel Bakhai has been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Ealing and Hillingdon in GLA elections on 1 May.

Nigel has strong links to both boroughs, living in Hanwell and working in Uxbridge. He is well known in the area as a community activist being both the chair of his local Residents Association and Vice-Chair of Governors at Greenfields Children's Centre in Southall.

Nigel fought the 2007 Ealing Southall by-election where he cut the Labour majority by 6,000 votes and forced the Conservative candidate into third place.

Nigel said:

"I'm delighted to be standing for the GLA in my local area and to be running alongside the Lib Dem candidate for Mayor, Brian Paddick. Londoners want real action to tackle crime and improve public transport: we have the team which can do that.

"My main priorities, both as a candidate and as a local resident, are to see that we get knives and guns off of our streets and to fight the planned expansion of Heathrow."

Hillingdon Councilor Mike Cox said:

"Nigel would be a tremendous asset to Hillingdon as our GLA representative. As a local man himself he understands the issues that matter in our area and is best able to respond to the needs of local people."
