Making the difference in the London Borough of Hillingdon

Cllr Mike Cox - Gazette Article Feb 2007

Hillingdon has suffered more murders in the last year than many can remember. Burglary and car crime are at a high - Hillingdon was recently rated amongst the 7th worst area in the country.

Tony Blair's nice little catch phrase "Tough on crime: Tough on the Causes of crime" sounds pretty hollow now after all their failures. Now we also know where the Conservatives stand too.

When your Lib Dem councillors called on the Council to toughen up our local crime enforcement by making the Police more visible on our streets and enforcing the licensing laws, the Tories watered down our proposals.

They even claimed the borough had "No problems with clubs and pubs". Perhaps this is part of 'Dave' Cameron's "Hug a hoodie" policy? Or have the Conservatives just gone soft?

We would effective action on crime, not tough words that sound good on the television. We have five simple steps that could really make a difference in our area. We want

. to spend the billions of pounds the Government is spending on ID cards on extra police on patrol. That's effective action to tackle crime in our community.

. to take back our town centres and make them places where families aren't afraid to go after dark. We will do this by giving communities power to close down troublesome pubs and clubs.

. to see sentences that mean something. When someone is sent to prison for life, they should serve exactly that.

. compulsory work and training in prison to cut re offending.

. better compensation for victims, paid for by the work prisoners will be made to do.

Through our Hillingdon Crime Survey, we're learning a lot more about what you think, not idle point scoring in the council chamber. If you want to express your opinion about crime in Hillingdon, visit www.hillingdonlibdems.org.uk or write to me at the Civic Centre and I'll send you the survey.
