Cllr Mike Cox - Gazette Article April 20071.28.17pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 6th Apr 2007
A few weeks ago Hillingdon witnessed the grotesque sight of Conservative Councillors voting to give themselves a pay increase. Not just any pay increase, but increases of up to 111%! This provides an additional burden to Hillingdon Tax payers of some £300,000 per annum. This increase comes at a time when the Conservative administration pleaded poverty and blamed the government and asylum seeking children for their woes. Reports have it that some Tories believe the electorate will have forgotten this in 3 years when they will face re election. If that is the case it is a sickening tactic which shows contempt for the electorate and contempt for the offices they hold. Let's not forget that being a councillor is a part time position. Many of the Tories who are now drawing council allowances in excess of £42,000 a year have full time paid jobs as well. This decision clearly shows the priorities the Conservatives have set for the administration of the Council. While they have cut essential services and grants for the elderly, those with disabilities, the young and the vulnerable, they have ensured their own pockets are well lined. Good Councillors give up a lot of time and put in a lot of effort because they want to put something back into society. They don?t do it to get paid. Public Service in Hillingdon has been officially declared as dead by Hillingdon Conservatives. Liberal Democrats will waive any increase due to them in order pay for a service which will help our residents in their wards. Being a councillor is about setting priorities we now know where the Conservatives have placed their priorities.
