Making the difference in the London Borough of Hillingdon

Cllr Mike Cox - Gazette Article May 2007

10 years ago today the country elected a new government. After 18 years of the Conservative government had become greedy, arrogant and devoid of new thinking. It was time for a change.

10 years on, Tony Blair's legacy is just a pale shadow of the hopes and dreams many had back in 1997. The war in Iraq, the introduction of Student fees, the misadministration of the billions which have been poured into the NHS and decline of our pensions leave a sour taste in the mouth.

Just one year ago the voters of Hillingdon elected an overwhelmingly Conservative Council. Perhaps they were persuaded by the soft words of David Cameron or perhaps they were just punishing an increasingly discredited Labour government.

So one year how have the Tory cabinet got on? Let's review a few highlights:

· They wasted £ ¼ million on changing the Councils logo without proper advice

· They have gagged the opposition from asking questions and even speaking at council meetings

· They have spent £ 1/3 million per annum increasing their own pay

· They withdrew grants to the Hillingdon Law centre and the Race Equality Council

· They have made £13 million of cuts to services for the elderly, the vulnerable and the young

· They spent about £1/2 million and 9 months getting rid of the former Chief Executive.

· They failed to represent Hillingdon at 2 Parliamentary committees looking into the problem of asylum seeking children and they failed to win the court case on unaccompanied asylum seekers.

· They are closing a special adventure and education centre of young adults

This list is not complete but paints a picture of an administration which is drunk with power, determined to settle a few scores. I have no doubt they believe the electorate will forget these misdemeanours in 3 years time. I have no doubt many honest Conservatives would be appalled if they realised what was being done in their name.
