Lib Dems demand public consultation on RAF Northolt base

"We have to take a stand for local people in Northolt and the surrounding area,” said Rosina Robson, the Lib Dem Uxbridge and South Ruislip candidate in the 8 June General Election. “The Stop Northolt campaign says the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has increased the number of non-military flights from 7,000 to 12,000 every year without consulting with local residents.

Rosina Robson, Lib Dem candidate for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, is challenging local Tories and backing a campaign for a public consultation on the future of RAF Northolt.

”Any substantial change of use for an airport – especially a military facility - should go through a proper consultation with the public.  There should be a fair and full planning process to cover this, but the local Conservative council seems to have let this change of use happen by stealth.”

The Stop Northolt campaign claims there is a report showing Northolt could take up to 50,000 commercial flights a year.

“This might include regional airlines using bigger jets,” added Rosina. “The campaigners believe £45 million of taxpayers’ money may be spent on renovations’.

“I have had hundreds of people contacting me about this – I’m concerned for local residents that the airport may become a regional airport without any public consultation. People in the north of the constituency and surrounding areas have a right to be worried and I will fight for a consultation about any more changes at RAF Northolt.”

The Lib Dems are against any airport expansion in the South East of England, including Northolt or a third runway at Heathrow. The party says the roads in the South East are already too congested and our skies polluted with dangerous levels of emissions that contribute to serious damage to our environment locally and globally.
